The right fibre makes the difference

Fibre network cables are becoming increasingly important in professional networks. Not only for data centres, but also for industrial environments, backbone connections, buildings, networks over longer distances, security installations and OT/IT infrastructures.

At 4net we help installers choose the right singlemode, multimode, fibre count, UPC or APC connectivity, indoor and outdoor solutions, pre-terminated cabling, patch cables, pigtails, connectors and test equipment.

Fibre optic connectors and fibre network infrastructure

Which fibre do I need?

The choice between multimode and singlemode fibre depends on distance, application and required network performance. International standards for structured cabling, such as ISO/IEC 11801, recommend multimode fibre (OM3, OM4, OM5) primarily for shorter distances within buildings and data centres. For longer distances, campus networks, industrial environments and applications with higher bandwidth requirements, singlemode fibre (OS2) is generally recommended due to its lower signal attenuation and greater reach.

The overview below helps you choose the most suitable fibre for your application. Not sure? Our specialists are happy to help you make the right choice.

Unsure whether to choose OM4 or OS2?

OM4 Multimode

  • Ideal for shorter distances
  • Widely used in buildings and data centres
  • High performance for modern networks
  • Attractive solution for internal backbone connections
  • Fibre cable itself usually more expensive than singlemode
  • Active components such as SFPs are generally more affordable

OS2 Singlemode?

  • Suitable for long distances
  • Ideal for campus and building connections
  • Highly future-proof
  • Widely used in industrial and critical infrastructures
  • Fibre cable itself usually more affordable than multimode
  • Active components are generally more expensive
  • Standard within telecom networks

Not sure which fibre you need?

Our specialists are happy to help you choose the right fibre solution for your project.

A reliable fibre infrastructure starts with the right cable.

That is why 4net chooses professional Dätwyler fibre cables that meet the highest quality and performance standards. Our standard stock includes OM4 multimode and OS2 singlemode 12-fibre cables in indoor/outdoor versions with CPR classification Cca. These cables are suitable for a wide range of applications.

Depending on your application, other cable constructions are also available. For long-term outdoor applications, PE sheaths are often used due to their high UV resistance. For underground installation, direct burial cables are available designed for direct placement in the ground. In environments where rodents pose a risk, fibre cables with corrugated steel protection can provide extra security. In addition to standard stock products, we also supply other fibre counts, constructions and project-specific versions.

Thanks to technical advice, custom cut lengths and flexible logistics, you always have the right fibre solution for your project. Collection from our warehouse or direct delivery to site: we adapt to your schedule.
